Media Literacy on the Movie Fearless

Watch the movie trailer and read the synopsis of Fearless (2006) by ‘Jet’ Li:

What are the differences between the historical account of the life of Huo Yuan Jia and his character in the movie. Identify at least 3 such differences.

Possible differences...
1. Was he really from a rich family? If not, what were the occupations that he engaged in?

2.Did he really fight an American Wrestler? If not, what actually happened?

3.Did he really die because he was poisoned in the match? If not, what are some possibilities that lead to his death?

4.Was his entire family killed, leaving him with no descendants? If not, how many grandsons and great grand sons does he have?

    1. He was not from a rich family. He engaged in an agricultural occupation, he also worked as a porter in a pharmacy and sold firewood too.
    2. No, he did not. In 1901, one of his students showed him a leaflet. It carried an advertisement about a Russian boxer, who proclaimed himself as "Matchless in China", and again in Shanghai with a British boxer, both protesting their greatness, but when Huo met their challenge neither bothered to show.
    3. No, he was not. It is rumored that he had been poisoned by the Japanese as revenge for their defeat during the Judo competition but this is speculation. Some people believe that Huo Yuanjia may have died due to incorrect changes made to his medicine and incorrect treatment by his new Chinese doctor. Others speculate that the European colonists were threatened by the rise of Chinese nationalism and had him poisoned.
    4. No, they were not. He had 7 grandsons and 11 great-grand sons. :)

    1. No he was not really from a rich family. He earned a living by guarding merchant caravans to Manchuria and back.

    2.No. He actually fought a British wrestler, Hercules O'Brien.

    3.No. He died right after fighting 10 Japanese Judokas. Thus, he could have hurt his organs during the fight and so he could have been beaten to death.

    4.Huo Yuan Jia had three sons,two daughters,seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

    1) No, he was not from a rich family. He worked as a guardian with his father.
    2) Yes, he did. He fought a wrestler from Russia.
    3) No, he was not poisoned. He was seriously ill and passed away on 9th August.
    4) No, his entire family was not killed. In the movie, his entire family was killed but actually in reality, he has 7 grandsons and 11 greatgrandson.

    He comes from a farming family but the show claims he's from a rich family.

    He did not actually fight a russian wrestler, he fought a british boxer.

    The japenese did not kill him, it was unknown who killed him.

    JOKE!!

    He's name is not Huo yuanjia, he's name is Goh Poh Fong.

    1) He was not from a rich family. His father was a merchant.

    2)His whole family was not entirely killed as he still has grandsons and great grandsons.

    3)He did not fight the Japanese master.

    He had some descendent and there are 7 grand-sons and 11 great grandsons
    He was also poisened by the japanese when he won the japanese judo team singlehandedly

    1. We do not truely know if he was rich at first but we know that they had a farm as a primary income.

    2. He fought a britain man Hercules O'brien which the rule is the person who drop off the arena first will lose.

    3. He wasn't poisoned in the match but its was due to his medicine that he took that cause his death.
