Internet addiction means that one have an overuse of internet. This usually happen when one uses too much internet and playing too much computer games. In my opinion, finding a way to quit internet addiction is very difficult. But I believe if it has a way in, there must be a way out.
I am not sure where Singapore would be able to treat people with internet addiction. But I think, doing more outdoor activities would be able to help the people to quit internet addiction. This way, the people would use less computer since they are doing more exercising and outdoor activities. Counselling in school would also help the poeple. The school counsellor would be able to give some suggestions to the people to stop internet addiction. Lastly, IMH might be a suitable place for the people to stop internet addiction as the internet addiction is a mental disease.

Internet addiction is a psychological disorder. Internet addiction is a relatively new and dangerous affliction that can wreck your health, damage relationships and reduce your overall productivity. I agree with my fellow peers. Internet Addiction is a growing problem in the world as technology continues to develop. Many teenagers don't realise that they are on the risk of internet addiction(like me). Many of us only think that we like to come online to chat, go on Facebook and other social networking sites like Myspace. However, this can be interpreted as internet addiction. I'm a patient(or victim) of internet addiction. There is no foolproof cure for it here, though. Parents should be knowing what their children are doing on their computer. This way, they could intercept when they suspect that their child are addicted to the internet. However i realised one thing - only by abstaining from internet is the 'cure'. Serious cases need to be referred to a psychological shrink. These people are susceptible to taking their own lives just for games, and awareness of this matter should be promoted in schools by giving talks and lessons like this.
I think internet addiction is not a disease but a problem developed over a long period of time from using and relying on internet too much. In Singapore, there are not much places where internet addicts can get help from. But, they can get help by accepting counselling from their family, friends or professional counsellers. Students who are internet addicts can approach school counsellers and teachers. They can give the addicts peer support so that they have more communication with human not computers or internet. Internet addiction will cause one to be easily agitated. Some serious internet addicts will also tend to skip meals or sleeps and they rather spend their time on the internet. This may last until someone, like their parents, stop them. Some may even ignore them and continue surfing the net. They can consult psychiatrists too. This might help them get away from their computer, calm down and relax their mind.
Internet addicts can get involve in outdoors activities such as sports, to distract their attention from the computer. This might help in their condition.
It is hard for Internet addicts to find help in Singapore as Singapore still do not regard Internet Addiction as a disease. But that does not mean that Internet Addicts are hopeless. No. The Institute of Mental Health(IMH) as creating a campaign called Community Addictions Management Programme or CAMP for short. CAMP offers a wide range of help. There is one way that parents can help prevent their children from becoming internet addicts or quit being a internet addict.Parents can hide one of the important components of the computer, for example, the 'mouse'.Parents can also take leaves from their jobs and spend more time on accompany their children in playing outdoor games or board games. Without the computer for a few days, children might feel that being with their parents are more important than the internet. Counselling can also help the internet addicts.
feel that internet addiction is a rare 'disease'that cannot be cured in a few days. Internet is commonly used in everyone's life nowadays. It becomes part of our lifes that we on the computer and start blogging or researching immediately when we reach home. In my opinion, a way would be to keep our mind out of thought about the interent. If we I think too much about it, we would want to use it. The more we use it, the more addicted we become. Having an outdoor hobbie or a healthy hobbie like reading would help alot. if you set your mind to cut down your internet ussage, you would be able to achieve your goals. I hope people would stop their addiction quickly as it can cause much hurt and displeasure to many.

It is the over relying of the internet for uses like facebook, twitter, msn etc. Many of them would think that are just chatting with friends and playing some games but they had already been addicted to internet unknowingly. I think that parents should communicate more with their children and also restrict the time use on internet. These time could be used more for family bonding and exercising which is better for the heart and soul of the children. Internet addicts could also seek help from the Institute of Mental Health(IMH)where a campaign called Community Addictions Management Programme(CAMP).
In Singapore, there are not much places for the internet addicts to find help because there are not many serious cases, unlike in China, but there is a place called Community Addictions Management Programme (CAMP) where internet addicts can seek help from.
There is also a‘Center for On-Line Addiction‘ (COLA) where it provides Internet addiction training workshops and corporate seminar series for counsellors and employers. The Center for Online Addiction, founded in 1995, offers hope and valuable resources to those seeking treatment for Internet addiction. Internet addiction is a type of compulsive disorder and as an organization, they are specifically dedicated to helping people who suffer from this new form of addictive behaviour.
Internet addicts can also find help at the institute of mental health (IMH), and ‘Computer Addiction Services’ where clinical psychologist Maressa Hecht Orzack treats addictive behaviours at McLean Hospital.
Parents also play a part in their children’s life. They can help and prevent them from being internet addicts. Parents could limit their time online and avoid surfing the Web to kill time. It also good for parents to cultivate relations with their children by spending time with them and pay attention to what their children do online. In this way, the children may find that their parents are more important than the computer. Often, most children are addicted to the internet mostly because of negligence from their parents and loneliness. By spending more time together can increase bonding between the child and parent, instead of the child and the computer. Counselling can also help the internet addicts.
Internet addiction has been a major problem in many teens around the world. Some teens in Singapore do face the same problem, internet addicts can seek help and advice from councillors. They could also find help from their parents and teachers. Most teens have this problem because they lack self control. Thus, I think the best help they can actually get is from themselves, for the 'remedy' to cure this problem is for one to take out the first step to have self control.
the biggest fear in your life, is the fear of yourself...
They have to be counselled but they had to change their habit of using computer non-stop. If they could break through the difficulty, they could free themself off from the computer.
It is difficult to find help for internet addicts in Singapore as internet addiction is not considered a disease unlike in China where they have rehabilitation centres for internet addicts. Even though it is difficult, it does not mean that it is not possible to find help.
The Institute of Mental Health(IMH) created a campaign called Community Addictions Management Programme(CAMP). CAMP offers a wide range of help. But, i feel that going for counseling is still the best choice of all.
Internet Addicts are people that do not limit their time spent on the Internet and is unable to manage their habit. There are not many places in Singapore where Internet Addicts can seek help. One of the few places that provides services is the Touch Community Service(http://www.tcs.org.sg/service/st_youth/01.php?item=2). Their programmes aims to develope healthy gaming habits and also counsels youth on Internet-realted issues. They also hire qualified coaches to engages youths in sports so that they will not spend to much time surfing the net. However there are also many other ways to cure people addiction to the Internet.Like in China, there is a Internet Addiction Disorder Clinic , Mr. Edmund Teo the School Counselor @ Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore, does not really support the idea of having a boot camp as it is like a jail for youths that are addicted to the Internet.(http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/02049/text_el/interviews.htm) But i feel that the best cure is themselves.Only they know their real feelings and thoughts.Only they themselves can control what they do.Others can only advice but their fate is in their own hands. If they do not want to heed advice from the proffesionals, its their life that they mess with.
Internet addicts can seek help by going for counseling and also encouragement by their family members. They can also try to restrict themselves from touching the computer and try to engage in some healthy activities such as sports or learning some useful lifeskills. But if they cannot help themselves, nobody can.

They have to be counselled but they had to change their habit of using computer non-stop. If they could break through the difficulty, they could free themself off from the computer.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult to find help for internet addicts in Singapore as internet addiction is not considered a disease unlike in China where they have rehabilitation centres for internet addicts. Even though it is difficult, it does not mean that it is not possible to find help.
ReplyDeleteThe Institute of Mental Health(IMH) created a campaign called Community Addictions Management Programme(CAMP). CAMP offers a wide range of help. But, i feel that going for counseling is still the best choice of all.
Internet Addicts are people that do not limit their time spent on the Internet and is unable to manage their habit.
ReplyDeleteThere are not many places in Singapore where Internet Addicts can seek help.
Edmund Teo the School Counselor @ Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore, does not really support the idea of having a boot camp as it is like a jail for youths that are addicted to the Internet.(http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/02049/text_el/interviews.htm)
But i feel that the best cure is themselves.Only they know their real feelings and thoughts.Only they themselves can control what they do.Others can only advice but their fate is in their own hands.
